Why is my iPad screen not working?

Before we get into the specifics, it’s important to understand why the iPad screen is suddenly not responding to touch. Here are some of the common ones:

  • Dust on your screen
  • Moisture on your hands
  • Obstruction from your case or screen protector
  • Major temperature changes (Avoid using Apple devices under extreme weather conditions)
  • An outdated software
  • Interference from your charger or other accessories

1. Force restart your iPad

The most straightforward and simple solution for issues like a frozen screen is to restart your device altogether. You can simply do this by pressing and holding either the volume button or the top button until the power-off slider appears. Once you turn on your iPad again, check out if the screen starts to respond normally.

2. Clean the screen and your hands

As mentioned above, dust and debris can be one of the reasons why your iPad screen is not working. Sometimes dust and tiny particles of debris can pile up on the screen and cause the screen to not work properly. After turning off your device, you can use a microfibre cloth to wipe the screen. The cloth can be either dry or slightly damp. Lastly, you can wash your hands and dry your hands before touching the screen again.

3. Remove screen protectors

If you have a screen protector on your device, it’s possible that this is obstructing your iPad from detecting your fingers. And sometimes if your device has cracked and uneven screen protectors, it can cause the iPad screen to not work properly. So try removing it from your screen to see if this solves the problem.

4. Avoid using devices under extreme temperatures

Whether it’s overly hot or cold, it’s best to avoid extreme temperatures. Touchscreens can be sensitive to temperature and will not respond when the user is using them under these conditions. You should wait until you can use your iPad at a normal temperature to see if that works.

5. Check for software updates

At times, faulty touchscreens would require you to update your device to be able to work again. To download the latest version of iOS, go to Settings > General > Software Update. You can simply follow the prompts to download and install it smoothly.

6. Factory reset on your iPad

In most cases, the software update should fix the unresponsive touchscreen. If you’ve tried everything else and your iPad touchscreen is still not working, you can consider factory reset on your iPad. Know that by doing this, it will delete all the existing data so make sure you have fully backed up your iPad before doing this action.
